Eatontown was incorporated as a township in 1873, becoming a borough in 1926. Fort Monmouth, a U.S. Army military base, operated there from 1917 until 2011, when it was closed. The Monmouth Mall, in the center of town, features a variety of stores, restaurants, and a fifteen-screen movie theater. The borough is bordered by Shewsbury Township, Shrewsbury Borough, Oceanport Borough, West Long Branch Borough, Ocean Township, and Tinton Falls.
