Fair Lawn was incorporated as a borough in 1924. Its name was initially spelled as one word, Fairlawn, named for David Acker’s estate home, built in 1865, which later became the Fair Lawn municipal building, but was eventually replaced. The official spelling of the word took it current two-word form in 1933. In its earliest days, the community was known as Slooterdam, a Dutch word meaning “river bend.” The borough is in Bergen County, New Jersey. One of the first planned communities in the United States, Radburn, founded in 1929, is an unincorporated community in Fair Lawn.
