Fairfield is a township within Essex County, New Jersey. It was originally formed as Caldwell Township by an Acts of the New Jersey Legislature, from portions of both Acquackanonk Township and Newark Township. Caldwell was then changed to Fairfield on November 6, 1963, was reincorporated as a borough on June 8, 1964 and was again changed to township on 1979 to gain advantage of federal revenue sharing policies.
