Florence, New Jersey was incorporated as a township in 1872. The community was named by the Florence City Company, formed in 1849, which laid out the original lots and streets in Florence, and was largely responsible for the construction of the Florence Hotel and wharf. In 1857, the Florence Iron Works began production and, by 1900, a large portion of the community was dependent on the foundry.
