Located in Camden County, New Jersey, Gibbsboro was incorporated as a borough in 1924. The community was founded in 1714, after George Matlack built a mill on a branch of Cooper’s Creek. In 1744, Joseph Hilliard acquired the mill and the surrounding lands, after which the community surrounding the mill became known as Hilliard’s Mill. Hilliard sold some of his property to John Matlack, a nephew of George Matlack, in 1766 and, when John Matlack died, he left his property and a mill to his daughter, Hannah Matlack Gibbs. The Gibbs mill was on Silver Lake, and a settlement began around this mill, as well. Some time in the mid 1840s, the community took the name of Gibbsboro.
