Hainesport Township, in Burlington County, was incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1924, created from portions of Lumberton Township. The community, however, was settled long before. In 1682, Richard and Margaret Haines came to settle on a land grant of about 1,700 acres, which included part of what is now Mount Laurel Township. Their son, Joseph Haines, bought several hundred acres of land beyond Lumberton, which included the village of Long Bridge, which was the original name of Hainesport. The Haines were Quakers, as were most of the early settlers of Hainesport.
