High Bridge was originally incorporated as a township in 1871, becoming a borough in 1898. High Bridge is situated along the South Branch of the Raritan River in north-central Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Water from the South Branch, in High Bridge, was used to power one of the first ironworks in the United States, established by William Allen and Joseph Turner. The town takes its name from a high bridge constructed by the Central Railroad of New Jersey. High Bridge borders Clinton and Lebanon townships.
