Hope Township was founded as a planned community, established by German Moravians in 1769, who had drawn up planning maps, street details, home locations, wells, businesses, farms, a school, tavern and church. Hope was incorporated in 1839, and includes the unincorporated communities of Mount Hermon and Silver Lake.
