Jefferson Township is in the northern part of Morris County, New Jersey. Created in 1804, the township was named for Thomas Jefferson, who was president at the time that the township was formed. There are two basic halves of the township: Milton and Lake Hopatcong, each staffing its own first-aid squad, fire department substation, and school system. Milton uses an Oak Ridge post office address, while Lake Hopatcong uses either Lake Hopatcong or Wharton as a post address. Lake Swannanoa is an unincorporated community in Jefferson Township.
