Jersey City is the county seat of Hudson County, New Jersey, and the second most populated city in the state. Jersey City is across from Lower Manhattan, between the Hudson River and Upper New York Bay, and the Hackensack River and Newark Bay. The city is bordered by the Hudson River, Secaucus, North Bergen, Union City, and Hoboken. The city was incorporated as the City of Jersey in 1820, and made independent of North Bergen in 1838, receiving its current name at that time.
