Knowlton Township was created by Royal Charter in 1763, and incorporated as a township in 1798. The township was named for Thomas Knowlton, a Continental Army Colonel during the American Revolution who was killed in action during the Battle of Harlem Heights. Columbia, Delaware, and Hainesburg are unincorporated communities within the township, along with the smaller hamlets of Centerville, Mount Pleasant, Polkville, and Knowlton itself. Knowlton Township is in the Kittatinny Valley, a section of the Great Appalachian Valley.
