Originally established as the borough of South Belmar in 1924, voters changed the borough’s name to Lake Como in 2004. One of the community’s original settlers was Jeremiah Newman, who arrived in 1817, and is buried at the Newman Family Burial Ground in Belmar Gardens. The lake for which the community was named was known as Three Cornered Pond during the early days of the settlement, while the area to the west was known as Polly Pond Bog.
