The borough and the township of Lebanon, New Jersey are both in Hunterdon County. Incorporated in 1798 as one of New Jersey's initial group of townships, Lebanon Township is first mentioned in 1731 as having been formed from Amwell Township. Lebanon Township is the most northern township within the county, bording Warren and Morris counties. The borough of Lebanon was incorporated in 1926, not from Lebanon Township, but from Clinton Township, which surrounds it. The borough is north of the Round Valley Reservoir, and was formerly known as Jacksonville, then Lebanonville, and Lebanonville Depot.
