Little Egg Harbor Township, in Ocean County, was formed in 1740, and incorporated as one of New Jersey's original townships in 1798, although its boundaries changed from time to time throughout the years. Mystic Island is an unincorporated community within the southern part of the township, and the borough of Tuckerton is entirely surrounded by the township, sharing a zip code, although it is a separate municipality. The area was predominantly rural and undeveloped until the late 1950s, when the area along the coast, especially, was developed as vacation properties.
