Located in Morris County, the borough of Madison, New Jersey is located about twenty-five miles west of downtown Manhattan. Madison is bordered by the boroughs of Chatham and Florham Park, as well as the townships of Chatham, Harding, and Morris. Madison is situated on a ridge of land extending from near Summit northwest toward Morristown. The earliest European settlers in the area came around 1715, establishing a community known as Bottle Hill. Later the settlement expanded and became known as South Hanover, which was changed to Madison in 1834.
