Mahwah Township is in Bergen County, New Jersey. Originally incorporated as Hohokus Township in 1849, its became Mahwah Township in 1944. The name is derived from "mawewi," a Lenni Lenape word which means "meeting place" or "a place where paths meet." Ford Motor Company operated an assembly plant in Mahwah from 1955 to 1982, which was once the largest motor vehicle assembly plant in the country. Mahwah, and the closure of the Ford plant, are mentioned in the opening line of the 1982 Bruce Springsteen song, Johnny 99.
