The borough of Matawan is in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The area that was to become Matawan was settled by the Dutch during the 17th century. Later, Scotch-Irish settlers came from New Hampshire, naming the town New Aberdeen. The neighboring Matawan Township used the name in the 1970s, changing its name to Aberdeen Township. Matawan was formed as a borough in 1895, at which time it took that name.
