Incorporated as a township in 1847, Medford is in Burlington County, New Jersey. Most of the township is within the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Medford Township borders the townships of Evesham, Lumberton, Mount Laurel, Shamong, Southampton, and Tabernacle, as well as Camden County. The independent borough of Medford Lakes is surrounded entirely by Medford Township. The area that became Medford Township was owned by Samuel Coles in 1670, and it began to become settled soon afterward. When its first post office was established in 1820, it was officially known as Medford of Upper Evesham.
