Originally formed in 1693, and incorporated as a township in 1798, Middletown is one of the oldest settlements in New Jersey. Following the Dutch surrender of New Netherland to the English in 1664, a large tract of land, which included that which would become Middletown, was granted to the Quakers, who formed Middletown and Shrewsbury. During the Revolutionary War, Middletown was held by the British up until the Battle of Monmouth. Unincorporated communities within the township include Belford, Fairview, Leonardo, Lincroft, Locust, Navesink, New Monmouth, North Middletown, Port Monmouth, and Sandy Hook.
