Montville Township, in Morris County, was incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature in 1867. The area that would become Montville was settled by Dutch farmers from New Amsterdam, which is now part of New York City, in the early 1700s. The settlement was originally named Uyle-Kill. During the Revolutionary War, The town was a significant military route from Morristown to the Hudson River. In 1800, it was renamed Montville. The unincorporated communities of Towaco and Pine Brook are located within the township.
