The township of Mount Olive was formed by the New Jersey Legislature in 1871. The two major roads that pass through the township are US Route 46, which runs through the center of town, and US Route 206, also known as the Netcong Bypass, which is in the east and northeastern part of the township. The unincorporated communities of Budd Lake and Flanders are located within the township.
