Mullica Township was incorporated in 1838, and named for Eric Mullica, an early Finnish settler who founded a homestead on the river, which was also named for him. The township is in the northeastern part of Atlantic County, in the New Jersey Pinelands, bordered by Egg Harbor City, Hamilton Township, Hammonton, and Washington Township. Located within the township are the unincorporated communities of Dacosta, Devonshire, Elwood, Nesco, Sweetwater, and Weekstown. Residents of these communities generally refer to themselves as residents of their respective communities, rather than the township.
