Neptune City, in Monmouth County, New Jersey, was incorporated as a borough in 1881. The area that was to become Neptune City was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape. The first European settlers to move into the area were Dutch and German farmers, who came there from New York and New England. By 1623, it was part of the province of New Netherland. In 1664, England claimed the area, and Peter Stuyvesant surrendered to the English without firing a shot. For thirty years before it became an independent borough, it was part of Ocean Township.
