Ocean City is an island city in Cape May County, New Jersey. Originally purchased by the Somers family, the island was named Peck’s Beach, for John Peck, a whaler who had a camp on the island. In 1879, a Methodist retreat was established there, incorporating as the Ocean City Association. In 1884, Ocean City was incorporated as a borough, becoming a city in 1897. Ocean City is known as a family oriented seaside resort.
