Incorporated in 1894, the borough of Old Tappan is in Bergen County, New Jersey, and is bordered to the north by the unincorporated town of Tappan, in Orangetown, New York, by Lake Tappan and the Hackensack River to the west, Harrington Park to the south, and Northvale and Norwood to the east. Settled in 1664, the land on which Old Tappan was built was purchased from the Lenni Lenape in 1682. The area was part of Orangetown, New York until 1769, when commissioners appointed by the King of England established the current state line.
