Situated in Camden County, Pennsauken Township, New Jersey is a suburb of Philadelphia. The township was incorporated in 1892 and, although the specific origin of its name is unclear, it was probably derived from a word in the Lenni Lenape language. The first drive-in theater in the country was in Pennsauken, opening in 1933. Petty’s Island, a 392-acre island in the Delaware River, is in Pennsauken, and the township borders Philadelphia, separated by the Delaware River, as well as Camden, Cherry Hill, Cinnaminson Township, Collingswood, Maple Shade Township, Merchantville, and Palmyra.
