Formed by Quakers and Baptists in 1666, Piscataway Township was incorporated in 1796, as one of New Jersey’s original townships. Piscataway is the fifth-oldest municipality in the state, having begun as part of the Native American territory, becoming one of the earliest settlements on the Atlantic Ocean seacoast during the colonial period. Piscataway is on the south side of the Raritan Valley, along a line of cities in central New Jersey, including New Brunswick, Highland Park, and South Plainfield. The township borders nine municipalities in Middlesex, Union and Somerset counties.
