The New Jersey township of Plumsted was incorporated from parts of Jackson Township in 1845, and became part of Ocean County in 1850. The unincorporated community of New Egypt is located within the township. The township is north of the McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst military base, and south of I-95.

The New Egypt Speedway began as the Fort Dix Speedway in the 1950s, at which time it was a dirt track. Paved in the 1960s, it became the New Egypt Speedway, and later the Central Jersey Speedway.
