The city of Rahway, New Jersey is in southern Union County, five miles west of Staten Island. European settlement of the area began in 1664, when the English bought the Elizabethtown Tract from the Lenni Lenape. Before the community was officially incorporated, it was known as Spanktown by local settlers and, in January of 1777, the colonists defeated the British in the Battle of Spanktown. Rahway was home to the first national mint to create a coin incripted with E pluribus unum.
