Incorporated as an independent township in 1906, River Vale was previously part of Harrington Township, at which time it was known as the Over Kill Neighborhood, or just Over Kill, as it was over the kill (Hackensack River) from Tappan. The township’s borders are defined by the Hackensack River to the east, which was dammed to form Lake Tappan, Pascack Brook to the south, and the New York border to the north, while its western border includes an unnamed creek and a section defined by Cedar Lane.
