The colony of Salem, New Jersey was founded by John Fenwick, a Quaker, in 1675, and incorporated as a township in 1798, becoming a city in 1858. Salem is located in Salem County, and situated along the Salem River, bordering Elsinboro Township, Pennsville Township, Mannington Township, Quinton Township, and Lower Alloways Creek Township. Salem is the seat of Salem County, and its county courthouse is the oldest active courthouse in the state.
