South Orange is an incorporated village in Essex County, New Jersey. The village was created within South Orange Township in 1869, and incorporated as an independent village in 1904, becoming The Township of South Orange Village in 1981. Despite its name, South Orange is one of only four municipalities in New Jersey with a village type of government. South Orange is bordered by Maplewood, Newark, West Orange, Orange, and East Orange. The East Branch of the Rahway River flows through the entire length of the township, although much of the year it is little more than a trickle.
