South River Borough is in Middlesex County, New Jersey. Between the years of 1683 and 1720, prior to its incorporation, the community was known as South River Landing. Its name was changed to Willettstown in 1720, for Samuel Willett, an early settler. In 1784, its name was changed to Washington, within East Brunswick Township, and it was referred to as Washington Village, Washington Woods, Little Washington, or simply Washington, until its name was changed to South River in 1870. In 1897, South River became an independent borough.
