Initially incorporated as Coaxen Township in 1845, the Burlington County township was renamed Southampton only a few weeks later. Located in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Southampton is bordered by Pemberton Township, Woodland Township, Tabernacle Township, Medford Township, Lumberton Township, and Eastampton Township. Unincorporated communities within the township include Beaverville, Buddtown, Burrs Mill, Chairville, Ewanville, Ewingville, Hampton Lakes, Leisuretown, Medford Park, Oak Shade, Red Lion, Retreat, Sandtown, and Vincentown. Southampton is one of fifty-six municipalities in the New Jersey Pinelands National Reserve.
