The city of Summit, New Jersey is in Union County. The city was originally incorporated as a township in 1869, becoming a city in 1899. Summit’s first European settlers came to the area in 1710. The community was known as Turkey Hill until the Revolutionary War, when it became known as Beacon Hill. In the late 18th century, it was known as the Heights over Springfield, when it was part of New Providence. Summit borders Berkeley Heights, Chatham, Chatham Township, Milburn, Mountainside, New Providence, and Springfield Township.
