Swedesboro, New Jersey was settled as part of New Sweden in the mid-17th century, primarily by Swedes and Finns. The town was known as Raccoon until its name was changed to Swedesboro in 1765. Raccoon Creek, which runs through the borough, was deep enough to serve as a water route, transporting wood and farming products to Philadelphia by the Delaware River. Swedesboro was incorporated as a borough in 1902. The independent municipality is surrounded on all sides by Woolwich Township.
