The township of Toms River is the seat of Ocean County, New Jersey. The township was originally established by Royal Charter as Dover Township in 1768, taken from parts of Shrewsbury Township, while the area was part of Monmouth County, and was incorporated as one of the state’s original townships in 1798. In 2006, the township’s name was changed to Toms River. Most of the township is on the mainland, but Dover Beaches North and Dover Beaches South, both parts of Toms River, are on the Barnegat Peninsula, which separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean.
