Union City, in Hudson County, New Jersey, is the most densely populated city in the United States. The city was created in 1925, with the merger of Union Hill and West Hoboken Township. The area that became Union City was part of a larger parcel purchased from the Hackensack tribe of the Lenni-Lenape by the Dutch in the early 1600s, and named New Netherland. West Hoboken was incorporated in 1861, and Union Hill was initially the largest village in Union Township. The city is bisected by New Jersey Route 495.
