Wantage was formed as a precinct in 1754, and incorporated as a township in 1798, becoming one of New Jersey’s initial group of townships. Wantage is the Kittatinny Valley of Sussex County. Rutan Hill, situated near the Beemerville section of the township, is the only volcano site in New Jersey, although it was last active more than 440 million years ago. The radio and television host, Lou Dobbs, lives on a 300-acre horse farm in Wantage Township. Wantage is located along New Jersey Highway 23, between High Point State Park and Sussex.
