Originally incorporated as a borough in 1904, West Caldwell became a township in 1981. West Caldwell is in the West Essex region of northwestern Essex County, New Jersey. Along with Caldwell and other neighboring communities West Essex was once part of the Horseneck Tract in the early 1700s. Following the Revolutionary War, Caldwell Township was formed. In 1892, Caldwell Center became Caldwell Borough, while the outskirts remained as Caldwell Township, out of which West Caldwell was later formed. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito lived in West Caldwell prior to being appointed to the Supreme Court, and G. Gordon Liddy spent part of his childhood in West Caldwell.
