The borough of West Long Branch is in Monmouth County, and the home of Monmouth University. Before it became West Long Branch, the community was known as Hoppersville, then Mechanicsville until the 1870s, and then Branchburg, becoming West Long Branch by 1889, although it was a part of Eatontown until 1908, when it separated due to a tax dispute. Holly Black, author of the Spiderwick series of books, was raised in West Long Branch, New Jersey. West Long Branch is west of Long Branch, east of Eatontown, south of Oceanport, and north of Oakhurst.
