The township of West Milford is in northwestern Passaic County, New Jersey. The community began as New Milford, settled by the Dutch in what was then western Bergen County, in the 18th century. The Dutch also built a town of New Milford in eastern Bergen County. When the towns applied for post offices in 1828, the westernmost town was changed to West Milford. Other place names within the township are Apshawa, Awosting, Browns, Charlotteburg, Clinton, Corterville, Echo Lake, Macopin, Moe Mountain, New City, Newfoundland, Oak Ridge, Postville, Smith Mills, and Utterville. Jeremy Glick, a passenger on board United Airlines Flight 93, which was hijacked and crashed during the September 11 attacks, was a resident of West Milford.
