The City of Wildwood is in Cape May County, and one of four New Jersey communities with Wildwood as a part of its nam, the others being the boroughs of Wildwood Crest and West Wildwood,, and the City of North Wildwood. The community was initially incorporated as a borough in 1895 but, in 1912, Wildwood and Holly Beach City joined together to become the City of Wildwood. Rock Around the Clock, often referred to as the first rock and roll record, was performed in Wildwood on Memorial Day weekend in 1954 by Bill Haley & His Comets. Wildwood is host to more than two hundred motels, most of the constructed in the 1950s and 1960s.
