Willingboro was one of nine divisions in the organization of Burlington County, within New Jersey, and was formed as the Constabulary of Wellingborrow in 1688, which then included what is now Delanco Township. Its name was, at time, spelled as Wellingborough, and other spellings at different times. In 1798, it was incorporated as Willingborough Township, after the establishment of the United States and the State of New Jersey. In the 1950s and 1960s, most of the Willingboro land was purchased by Abraham Levitt and Sons, who undertook a massive redevelopment, in which the town’s name was changed to Levittown Township but, since the township was less than twelve miles from Levittown, Pennsylvania, its name was changed back to Willingboro in 1963. The township borders Edgewater Park, Burlington, Westampton, Mount Laurel, Moorestown, Delran, and Delanco townships.
