The seat of Otero County, Alamogordo takes its name from the Spanish for "fat cottonwood". Holloman Air Force Base and White Sands Missile Range are two prominent military bases near town. Alamogordo was founded in 1898 when the El Paso and Northwestern Railroad extended its railway to the town.
