Artesia, New Mexico is a city in Eddy County. The community was originally known as Miller, which came from a railroad employee. Then, for a brief time, it was named Stegman, after its first postmistress, Sallie Chisum Robert Stegman. Sallie dropped the “Stegman” from her name after her divorce and shortly afterward, in 1903, the town was renamed Artesia, and incorporated by that name in 1905. An artesian aquifer was discovered in the area in 1903, which depleted in the 1920s.
