Clayton is the county seat of Union County, New Mexico. The first New Mexico town on the Santa Fe Trail, Clayton has long been a crossroads for travelers heading from Texas to Colorado, and for those traveling from Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas to Taos and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Clayton is located near the base of Rabbit Ear Mountains, southeast of Des Moines and southwest of Boise City.
