Situated in Sierra County, New Mexico, west of the Elephant Butte Reservoir and State Park, the city of Elephant Butte was incorporated in 1998. The community was originally built to house workers who were employed to build the Elephant Butte Dam, and now serves largely as a retirement community. Elephant Butte is north of Truth or Consequences.
