Situated in the Rio Grande Valley between two mountain ranges, surrounded by mesas, the city has four distinct seasons with low humidity year round. Often known as Española, with the tilde, Espanola is located primarily in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, although portions of the eastern and central sections of the city are in Santa Fe County. The community was founded as a railroad station in 1880, and incorporated as a city in 1925.
