The seat of Cibola County, Grants began as a railroad camp in the 1880s, when a contract was awarded to build a section of the new Atlantic and Pacific Railroad through the region. The surname of the three brothers who were awarded the contract was Grant, and the railroad town took their name, initially known as Grants Camp, then Grants Station and finally, Grants.
